Fashionable general entertainment conduit Colors and production house End mol may have goofed up, if the results of a snap telephonic opinion poll conducted by content syndication firm Futuristic Media Network is to be believed. As bollywood badshah Salman Khan was unveiling the identities of the inmates of Bigg Boss Season 4, the revolutionary Media Network team of freelance writers and contributor across India was on the job, anxiously telephoning youth within the age group of 16 to 39. They had just two questions to ask: Are you happy with the choice of prisoner for Big Boss 4 and if not why?
The Futuristic Media Team telephoned about two thousand youth across the country within a span of about four hours. Another group monitored the responses and tweets on Twitter.
The consequences of this snap telephonic poll were: About 90 per cent of the youth were upset with the choice of inmate and disillusioned with the show in general. And the reason was simple. There are only criminals, thieves, wannabe starlets and a lawyer who is only known for defending terrorists and deshdrohis. “Even if Abbas Kazmi was offered to the option to defend fanatic butcher Azmal Kasab, he could have turned it down. quite a few lawyers turned down the offer. Instead he tried every trick in the book to delay and prolong the trial. If it were not for Nikam (the state prosecutor), Kasab may have got missing with the deadliest revolutionary act of the century,” said one annoyed youth.
According to 21-year-old actress Rituu Sachdev, one of the respondents, “India is not just about criminals and crime. Except for Manoj Tiwari and Shweta Tiwari, the others are wannabes or strugglers.” Another youth who requested anonymity said, “Sakshi Pradhan is only known for her ‘nude mms’ scandal. Her exploits in MTV Splitsvilla were mired in disagreement. There were lots of allegations against the production team as well as the participants. There were accusations of sexual favours being exchanged at that time which was prominently covered by Mumbai tabloid Mid-day. Are these the people who represent India? Couldn’t Colours and Endemol get some role model?
According to editor of Futuristic Media Network and architect of the poll, Flynn Remedios, the common refrain among the respondents of the poll was, “We expected better. Colours and their sponsors including Vodafone spend several crores of rupees on this show. The show is aired during prime time and is normally a family entertainer. While we understand there has to be disagreement, why couldn’t they get some people who are more representative of a cross section of India? What about our ex-sportspersons? What about bollywood divas? What about other professionals. Barring a few, this is a harem of crooks and criminals,” was the general feedback of most of the respondents.
Futuristic Media Network monitored hundreds of responses on Twitter as Salman Khan kept audiences glued to the idiot box. “Even on Twitter, most tweets were critical of the choice of candidates or inmates,” says Flynn Remedies. Former member of the press and mother Kiran Manral felt that this season of Big Boss was not for kids. She wouldn’t want her kid to watch the show, she tweeted.
Some others critiqued the main sponsor Vodafone for sponsor a reality show which has dubious typescript. “This is a family show. We watch it all as a family. The Censor Board and the IB bureau should intervene and shift the show to another time slot,” said a media professional on Twitter. It may be recalled that the last season of Bigg Boss 3 was also mired in controversy. A PIL was filed alongside some kissing or intimate scenes and a ban on the show was demand. The IB ministry of the Government of India intervene and Colors had to run an apology and qualification.
